Dorothee Gaile Teaching Practice / other practical engagements
1973 – 2009 Dorothee Gaile taught modern languages and German for foreign students at Hessian schools and at the Rhine-Main University of Applied Sciences (Wiesbaden).
1995-2001, as a teacher at the Elly-Heuss-Schule in Wiesbaden, she organized 4 multilateral European Studies and Socrates/ Comenius 1 school projects with partners from 6 European countries focussed on ‘European Identity’. During these years, she organized educational exchange programmes with schools in Kent(UK), Dordogne (France), Sicily (Italy), and Indiana (USA).
2002-2015 Dorothee held a position as project coordinator and teacher trainer at the ‘ Office for Teacher Training’ in the Federal State of Hessen (Germany). Starting in 2003 she built up a cooperation with Ruth Schoenbach and Cynthia Greenleaf, developers of the innovative literacy intervention programme Reading Apprenticeship at WestEd, Oakland (CA). Together with her project team Dorothee adapted Reading Apprenticeship to German schools and set up modular teacher training courses under the titles ‘Lese- und Sprachförderung nach PISA’ (2002- 2004) and ‘Lese-und Sprachförderung. Lesen macht schlau” (= German adaptation of the Reading Apprenticeship programme) (2005-2010), qualified 180 colleagues as multipliers in all 15 Hessian school districts in 4 waves of qualification and reached ca. 500 schools throughout the federal State of Hessen.
2005 – 2017 Following invitations from teacher training institutes in several other Federal German States and in Austria Dorothee presented the Reading Apprenticeship programme to colleagues and decision-makers during teacher training conferences.
2006- 2014 Dorothee Gaile took part in the project development and “train the trainers” – programme in Comenius Projects Adore, BaCuLit, ISIT and BleTeach coordinated by Prof. Christine Garbe at the University of Cologne (formerly Leuphana University Lüneburg).
