Education & Training:
Christine Garbe studied German Language and Literature, Social Sciences, History and Pedagogy in Hannover (1972 – 1977), accomplished her qualification as grammar school teacher for German, History and Politics (1985) at a Comprehensive School in Berlin-Kreuzberg and her doctorate (1990) at Free University of Berlin. In between she worked as a freelancer in several cultural and educational projects.
Awards:
Her doctoral thesis about patterns of femininity in the oeuvre of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (Title: „Die ›weibliche‹ List im ›männlichen‹ Text. Jean-Jacques Rousseau in der feministischen Kritik“, 1992) was awarded the Young Investigator Award of the Dr. Margrit Egnér Foundation 1994 in Zurich (CH).
Career:
Since 1980 Christine taught academic courses about reading socialisation and German literature at Free University of Berlin, 1990 – 1996 she worked as academic assistant in the German Department of the FU Berlin in the field: “Literary socialisation and reading materials for girls and women”. From 1996 to 2010 she worked as a Professor of German Literature and Cultural Studies at Leuphana University of Lueneburg. From 2010 to 2018 she held the chair for “Reading and Media Socialisation of Children and Adolescents” in the Faculty of Philosophy at University of Cologne and taught academic courses in German literature and literature didactics /reading education for future teachers. Since 2006 Christine coordinated European projects about reading instruction, professional development of teachers and literacy policies, funded by EU programmes Socrates, Comenius, Erasmus+ and the EU Commission (cf. Projects). Since August 2018 Christine is retired and lives in Berlin and Buenos Aires.
