Abstract

E-books are (picture) stories presented on multimedia devices such as a computer, a tablet or a smart phone. Most e-books contain verbal text in addition to the onscreen written text. Reading thus becomes co-reading or reading along with the computer. This allows emergent or beginning readers to read books for which they would otherwise need the help of an adult independently thus increasing the amount of book encounters. Research has shown that digital effects added to an e-book can have a surplus value while other additions might obstruct learning.
